What does Art Therapy look like?

Contact

Contact me via email; you can use the contact buttons or email at the bottom of this page. I will send you a referral form to complete and answer any questions as needed.

Assessment

A 60 minute assessment will be booked to assess your needs, time scales of Art therapy, best practice and to cover any further questions.
The time scales of Art Therapy is dependant upon your needs and is often an initial 12 weeks.
I am flexible to meet your needs and open to discussion where needed.

Sessions

Art Therapy sessions are 60 minutes per week. A general session begins with a check in and ends with a check out, to ensure you feel safe and contained after a session. It can take around 3 sessions to become used to the process; this is totally normal!
Once in a routine, the main part of the session is creating artwork, whether this be independently or guided gently by myself. Some people like to create imagery then reflect together, some reflect during creation as this helps focus and some may be non-verbal. It often depends how you are feeling on the day!

Review

A 6 weekly review will be scheduled, to review how you are feeling about your Art Therapy and raise any concerns or suggestions from either of us.
It is at this stage that we can discuss whether the initial 12 week period needs extending, depending on your personal needs.
I will also invite you to complete a feedback form.

Support between sessions

It is important you feel safe and contained in-between sessions.
I may offer some useful self care techniques for you to engage with over the weeks outside of sessions. This may include sleep hygiene techniques, set goals by yourself, self care activities or image/ creative journals; all of which are suggestions to support you sufficiently.

Finalising Art Therapy

Endings are so important in Art Therapy as they often unearth memories that generate challenging emotions for us. With this in mind, I always remind people when their endings are nearing and we reflect upon how you would like to end your Art Therapy.
During your final session we will reflect upon your Art Therapy experience. I will share some feedback and offer tips, recommendations and signposts for life beyond Art Therapy. We will look through your images and reflect upon these and you can decide the fate of them.
I will invite you to complete a feedback form to enhance my practice and remind you support is here if needed.
